Green Gains Live
Our flagship biodiversity event, held every summer, brings together landowners, corporate leaders, biodiversity experts, and public bodies with a common goal: to reverse the decline of the UK's natural environment.
Event Date: Thursday, July, 6, 2023
Event Location: Little Cowbridge Grange, Bluebell Wood, Essex
With biodiversity net gain a more relevant topic than ever, Ground Control’s expansive summit was specially curated to drive an understanding of where nature sits within wider net zero and business strategies. The event’s overarching theme ‘Nature in Balance’ caused delegates to consider how biodiversity and carbon are best tackled together and innovative, best-practice approaches to on-the-ground action were showcased throughout the day’s sessions.
"We are the custodians and determinants of the health of nature, and thus the speed with which we address climate dynamics…we should take our custodianship really seriously"
"Our lives and livelihoods depend on wetlands. They are our life support system – wetlands keep rivers flowing and aquifers recharging, they cool our cities and buffer us from damaging floods and coastal storms, and they help stabilise the climate and purify water and bring us a world full of wildlife"
Matt Goddard (Ground Control), John Brewington (Severn Trent), and Joe May (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust) consider examples of Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions (SuDS) and how they can reduce the impact of flooding, enrich the recreational value of external spaces, promote health and well-being and support healthy blue green infrastructure.
Chris Chippendale (Ground Control), Andy Benson (Bumblebee Conservation Trust), and Mark Schofield (Plantlife) explore the challenges associated with turning 'grey-to-green' in the urban environment.
Kevin Slezacek (Ground Control), Hannah Davidson (Earthwatch Europe) and Jackie Shallcross (The Tree Council) explore how Ground Control and Severn Trent engaged local communities, volunteers, and schools to create a patchwork of 72 ‘Tiny Forests’ across the West Midlands.
Chris Bawtree (Nature Recovery Director, Ground Control) showcases a host of nature-based solutions and nature-positive land management techniques.
