Celebrating our apprentices
Meet Isabel Reed, Level Three Apprentice for Ground Control Highways and Infrastructure
What apprenticeship are you doing at Ground Control and what does this cover?
I’m currently undertaking a level 3 business administration course within the Highways team. This covers such a wide range of topics, so you get a view of the business that you work in as a whole. Some of the topics include IT skills, regulations and policies, stakeholders, and business fundamentals and processes. I’m currently working on planning and organisation which covers meeting minutes, organising travel, and changing processes that I carry out.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis in your job in the Highways team at Ground Control?
I look after the highways inbox which involves dealing with purchase order requests, processing invoices, and dealing with queries. I also spend time carrying out tasks such as finding prices, ordering sundries as well as keeping project cost trackers and other spreadsheets up to date. No two days are the same which makes my job so enjoyable as I’m always carrying out different tasks and dealing with different queries.
What is the best part of your job?
100% my team! I couldn’t have joined a nicer team who have supported me in every aspect of my apprenticeship. The exposure to other parts of the business has been more than I could have expected, and it has helped me expand my network and knowledge of other business areas.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into a Business Administrator apprenticeship like yours?
I’d say that you don’t need office/admin experience so don’t let that hold you back from applying for it. Before starting at Ground Control, I worked as a Team leader in retail so it is completely different. However, with transferable skills, I was able to bring some knowledge with me and the rest I developed within my role.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends as well as walking my dog. I also enjoy photography and baking when I have a few hours spare.
